Natural Lapis Lazuli Necklace (SS45)
Two big chunks of lapis lazuli are strung onto a necklace of lapis lazuli chips with a pendant of natural lapis. All of the big chunks of lapis are framed with Bali sterling silver beads.
Lapis lazuli is actually a rock, with the azure blue colour coming from the lazurite mineral within it - from which the pigment ultramarine derives. Other minerals contain in lapis lazuli are sodalite and calcite as well as pyrite. Lapis lazuli is arguably one of the oldest stones used in jewellery and is treasured as much today as it was in ancient times (I have read that it was part of Tutankhamen's mask - used to drive away evil sprits and light the King's spiritual journey).
Gemstone quality lapis lazuli contains no inclusions of other minerals but here in the world of semi-precious I think they add to the charm! Found in Afghanistan, Russia and Chile, even semi-precious quality lapis is relatively expensive.
This necklace is 19" (482mm) long and finishes with a sterling silver lobster clasp.
