"Country Sports" Bloodstone and Aventurine Necklace (LS33)
Bloodstone - Aries" birthstone - is also known as heliotrope, a much prettier name. But the blood red spots of red iron oxide betray its more popular nomenclature. Some gemmologists distinguish two types of bloodstone: plasma, a very deep green and opaque with specks of red iron oxide; and heliotrope, a lighter shade of green which may contain deep and lighter greens within it. The stones here have varying amounts of red in them and the greens range from a deep moss to dark teal. Bloodstone is usually opaque, as here, but can be transluscent - and one of the faceted stones here does have a lovely transluscence to it, when held up to the light.
The faceted ovals are interspersed with tiny round sterling silver beads, little light green ametrine beads and larger round bloodstone beads.
I imagine this necklace being worn by ladies who pursue the traditional country sports - or just walking their dogs or playing golf. It would go well with tweed!
The necklace is 18" (457mm) long and finished with an elegant hook and figure of eight clasp.
